Here’s one I’m particularly proud of. I had the painting in mind for a long time, but as I work on commission pieces I often put paintings aside when the other work is more pressing. This one, however, needed to get done right away and I decided to have a go at it.
I had the image from a photo my mom sent me a few months ago and it felt very much like what I’d been working on. It’s a little tricky, as some of the sloped lines of his body would be easy to paint out of, but I wanted to try to capture the lightness of his pose. He’s posed in a way to emphasize his openness and vulnerability, and I think the unexpected bend in the elbow and the curve in the foot are right on target.
Like a lot of kids, my son was fascinated with dinosaurs. A little dinosaur was a kind of dog my husband and I took to the children’s museums and it became a favorite of all the kids. It’s interesting that the original dinosaur was a kind of dog. You don’t see that very often. There’s an obscure reference to him in the Bible in 1 Kings 19:7, but it’s the only one I know of.
